KTAL NBC 6, KMSS FOX, KSHV 45, ktalnews.com in Shreveport, Louisiana currently in search of an experienced hands-on Sports and News journalist to serve as Sports & News Reporter / MMJ!

The Sports & News Reporter / MMJ position produces, reports, shoots, writes, voices, edits, and feeds general news and sports content for all platforms in a manner that is clear, engaging, and meaningful to news and sports consumers.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Reports news and sports stories for broadcast, describing the background and details of events

  • Arrange interviews with people who can provide information about stories

  • Reviews copy and corrects content, grammar, and punctuation errors, following prescribed editorial style and formatting guidelines

  • Researches and analyzes background information related to news stories to provide complete and accurate information

  • Gathers information about events through research, interviews, experience, or attendance at political, news, sports, artistic, social, or other functions

  • Pitches stories to news managers and news producers that are relevant to the local community

  • Receives assignments and evaluates leads and tips to develop story ideas

  • Check reference materials such as books, news files, or public records to obtain relevant facts

  • Revises work to meet editorial approval or to fit time requirements

  • Produces and presents reports for all platforms

  • Ensures that all content meets company standards for journalistic integrity and production quality

  • Writes stories for the web and other social media platforms

  • Interacts with viewers/users on social media sites

  • Produces and presents sports reports for all platforms

  • Ensures that all sports content meets company standards for journalistic integrity and production quality

  • Writes and delivers sports stories in a clear and concise manner

  • Assists in writing, copy editing, researching, and coordinating sports programming and other content as needed

  • Respond to breaking sports events and other urgent newsroom situations as required

  • Works closely with the sports team to develop comprehensive sports coverage

  • Participates in promotional activities including public appearances

  • Performs special projects and other duties as assigned 

  • Executes live shots for news and sports   

  • Maintains video equipment

  • Edits video clips for television broadcasts and content

  • Assists with sports and news coverage in/from our Shreveport, LA bureau or our Texarkana, TXBureau when needed

  • Performs special projects and other duties as assigned

 Requirements & Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work-related experience

  • Fluency in English

  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.

  • Minimum two years’ experience in news or sports reporting (More or less depending on market size)

  • Good on-air presence

  • Proficiency with computers, telephones, copiers, scanners, fax machines and other office equipment

  • Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments and handle multiple tasks simultaneously

  • Valid driver’s license with a good driving record

  • Flexibility to work any shift

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: High stress, high energy environment with deadline pressures. Some travel may be required on rare occasions.
