KVUE, the ABC affiliate in Austin, Texas, is looking for a dynamic, innovative and people-first News Director to lead day-to-day editorial coverage while overseeing content creation and distribution across all platforms. This role is built for a leader who embraces our values of creative storytelling, community, earning trust through accountability and respect for diverse viewpoints. This newsroom sees deep dives, specialized beat reporting and investigative journalism as key components of newscasts as well as digital content. The news leader will play a big role in helping us live our mission to make Austin better.

KVUE’s ideal candidate is a proven editorial leader with strong news judgment who is not afraid to embrace brand and audience growth strategies in partnership with the Director of Marketing. Since Austin is the top streaming market, our news director must be digitally focused and understand the value of audience engagement by the entire team.

Responsibilities: 

  • Lead the news and content teams to execute the station’s brand
  • Collaborate with news management, marketing, production, technology, and front-line team members to drive the content strategy for the station
  • Lead the integration of digital and broadcast content strategies to serve growing audiences on all platforms to meet or exceed our KPIs
  • Partner with the digital team to use data to inform editorial decisions
  • Regularly review content strategy and ensure accountability to the content plan and to audience growth
  • Oversee alignment of content team structures to be better equipped to deliver storytelling in the digital age
  • Responsible for hiring talent in front of and behind the camera
  • Conduct regular reviews of all content with a continuous improvement mindset
  • Collaborate with marketing and community relations on aligning priorities around brand and serving the greater good of Central Texas
  • Inspire and coach superior, unique and engaging storytelling, and implement leadership development opportunities for our future leaders
  • Lead a culture that owns enterprise reporting and storytelling as well as breaking news across all platforms
  • Ensure high-quality, relevant, local content that sets the operation apart from competitors
  • Manage the department budget
  • Drive and reward excellence, creativity and innovation that leads to differentiation and success
  • Lead and mentor leadership team and employees

JOB EXPERIENCE

5-7 Years 


REQUIREMENTS

 Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or related field and news leadership experience of 5 years or more
  • 7-10 years of content experience, including generation of original content on all screens and leading big event coverage
  • Solid journalistic and content judgment that emphasizes accurate, fair and unique local content that is representative of the community we serve
  • Deep understanding of tenets of professional journalism
  • Proven ability to develop a content strategy and drive accountability
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines, calm demeanor under stress
  • Must be knowledgeable in broadcast law
  • Must understand digital production and all current digital platforms
  • Active social media participant and strong social media skills
