DESCRIPTION
Core Responsibilities
- Forecast & Cover Severe Weather: Monitor, forecast and lead live coverage of tornadoes, severe thunderstorms, flooding, winter storms and other significant weather events.
- Data & Technology: Use statistical analysis, environmental modeling, large datasets and emerging machine learning/AI tools to develop accurate forecasts and identify developing threats.
- Multiplatform Storytelling: Translate complex meteorological information into compelling, easy-to-understand stories for television, digital and social media.
- Weather Reporting: Enterprise and report weather-related stories across Eastern Iowa, including climate, atmospheric and environmental topics.
- Collaborate: Work with producers, reporters, photographers and other newsroom staff to deliver high-quality multiplatform coverage.
JOB EXPERIENCE
Key Requirements
- Experience: Proven meteorology experience with strong knowledge of forecasting and severe weather prediction. A degree in meteorology, atmospheric science or a related field preferred.
- Communication: Excellent writing, presentation and on-camera skills with the ability to explain complex science clearly.
- Analysis: Ability to analyze large datasets using statistical and environmental monitoring tools.
- Technology: Experience with advanced weather technology; familiarity with WSI Max, radar and emerging AI/machine learning applications is a plus.
- Broadcast: Broadcast journalism or television experience highly desirable.
