DESCRIPTION

Position Title: Live Sports Production Van Operator

Position Status: Full- time, Non-Exempt

Position Pay: $ 19.25- $21.63 Per/Hr. DOE

 

SUMMARY
A Live Sports Production Van Operator for our family-owned company is expected to share in the same baseline job description. You will report to the SWX Station Manager as well as other managers. Our operation is based on a story-centric workflow. That means we prioritize story treatment across a variety of platforms, from our linear broadcasts to our streaming services, as well as social media and our digital properties. You must be a leader who loves sports, is a strong communicator, and embraces work with technical equipment. You’ll be responsible for the setup, operation, and maintenance of broadcast equipment housed in an Outside Broadcast (OB) or production van during live sports events. This role ensures seamless coordination between camera feeds, audio, graphics, and other production elements to deliver high-quality live sports coverage.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as a representative of the station from the scene of big events.
  • Coordinate and work closely and respectfully with on-site staff.
  • Transport the live production van to and from station to live sporting events
  • Oversees and execute set up, tear down and storage for equipment at live sporting events.
  • Communicate frequently throughout the day and work collaboratively with others in the field and the station.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues quickly and effectively under pressure.
  • Get along and communicate with a variety of people in extreme circumstances.
  • Act professionally when dealing with on-site clients.
  • Work with the broadcast team on best practices and innovating productions.
  • A competitive passion to win and openness to innovation is mandatory. 
  • Must be flexible to cover big events on any shift, including nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

 

  • A minimum of two years of experience in live sports broadcasting is preferred.
  • Degree in Media, Communications, Broadcasting or similar program preferred.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Availability for big event coverage on unassigned shifts.
  • Exemplary communication skills.
  • Knowledge of IP-based production systems or remote broadcast workflows.
  • Ability to think quickly and troubleshoot in high pressure situations and have strong organization and communication skills.
  • An above-average, demonstrable knowledge of television sports production techniques and broadcast delivery is extremely helpful.
  • Must possess valid driver’s license and be insurable.

 

TECHNICAL SKILLS

 

  • Office Tools: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) or equivalent tools (e.g., Google Workspace), including email and calendar management.
  • Video Editing: Knowledge of software such as Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, or similar tools.
  • Broadcast-Specific Software: Proficiency with broadcast equipment such as video switchers (e.g., Ross, Grass Valley), replay systems (e.g., EVS, NewTek), and audio boards.
  • Live Streaming: Strong understanding of signal flow (SDI, fiber, IP, etc.) and troubleshooting techniques.

  • Proficient in speaking, reading, and writing to communicate complex information clearly.
  • Ability to adjust tone and vocabulary for diverse audiences and platforms.

Customer Service Skills

  • Strong conflict resolution and adaptability to audience preferences.
  • Professionalism when representing the station at public events or online.

Reasoning Abilities

  • Strong critical thinking skills to evaluate sources, analyze data, and make editorial decisions.

Physical Demands

  • Frequent standing, walking, and sitting for extended periods eight (8) to ten (10) hours per day.
  • Occasional lifting of equipment (e.g., cameras, tripods) up to 50 pounds.
  • Frequent working in tight, confined spaces.
  • Manual dexterity in operating equipment and computers.
  • Ability to work irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Work Environment

  • Both indoors in various locations and outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Possible exposure to moderate or high noise levels both indoors and outdoors.
  • Extensive travel and on-location work required.
