Overview:
The managing editor oversees the day-to-day and long-range editorial work of KCBS Radio’s news team, working in tandem with colleagues to coordinate news coverage. Assign reporters, writers, editors, producers, anchors, and production assistants. Set editorial deadlines. Ensure all material adheres to KCBS Radio’s editorial standards. Key responsibilities include content strategy and story development, quality control, and maintaining KCBS Radio’s voice and style across all mediums.
JOB EXPERIENCE
The managing editor oversees training and development of KCBS Radio news editors and producers (collectively “the news desk”).
What You'll Do:
- Editorial Leadership: assign stories, oversee edits, and ensure deadlines are met
- Content Strategy: develop and implement editorial strategies to align with programming goals, including topic selection, story angles, and content calendars
- Quality Control: review and edit content to ensure accuracy, consistency, and adherence to style guidelines
- Team Management: train and mentor editorial staff, providing feedback and editorial / coverage guidance
- Collaboration: work closely with on-air staff to ensure thorough and comprehensive news coverage
- Fact-Checking: verify information and sources for accuracy in published content
- Edit and produce newscasts (including but not limited to selecting, editing and/or writing news content)
More of What You'll Do:
- Manage the flow of news and information (including but not limited to receiving and researching news tips, calling on breaking stories, conducting off-air interviews with officials and newsmakers)
- Edit audio for broadcast and digital assets
- Collaborate with colleagues about news coverage (i.e. propose and contribute to daily and long-term coverage plans)
- Research and arrange compelling live and pre-recorded interviews
- Promote news coverage on a variety of channels, including broadcast, social media, the Audacy app and station website
- Contribute content to the station’s social media channels, the Audacy app and the station website, KCBSradio.com
- Protect the station’s FCC license
- Other duties as required by management
- Occasional night, weekend and other non-business hours work on an as-needed basis, as determined by business needs, breaking news, etc.
REQUIREMENTS
Required & Preferred:
- Strong Editing Skills: Excellent grammar, punctuation, and writing skills to ensure high-quality content
- Leadership Abilities: Ability to motivate a team of editors and writers effectively
- Strategic Thinking: Develop and execute content strategies aligned with news brand goals
- Communication Skills: Clear and concise communication with both editorial staff and other departments
- Organizational Skills: Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously
- Decision-Making: Confidence in making editorial judgments and resolving content issues
- Bachelor's degree in Journalism, English, Communications, or related field
- Extensive experience in editing and writing roles
- Proven leadership
- Familiarity with industry trends and best practices
