KGW the TEGNA-owned NBC affiliate in Portland OR is searching for a motivated and people-oriented leader to step into an interim newsroom leadership role.
This interim assignment will provide strong editorial and operational leadership during a transitional period and is ideal for an experienced newsroom leader who is hands-on, collaborative, and comfortable leading from the middle of the action.
Our ideal candidate is a collaborative, experienced leader who’s great at juggling multiple projects and growing journalists. Through active coaching and day-to-day editorial leadership, this role helps elevate our station’s storytelling, writing, and execution.
The individual in this interim leadership role will bring excellent news judgment and strong people skills, with the ability to motivate, collaborate, and own the big story. They will lead day-to-day decision making on broadcast coverage, approve scripts, and provide direct writing support and coaching to producers and reporters as needed.
Responsibilities:
• Work closely with producers, reporters, anchors, and photographers on compelling, impact-driven original storytelling and daily news coverage
• Review and approve scripts to ensure accuracy, clarity, tone, and strong storytelling
• Provide hands-on writing assistance and coaching to producers and reporters, particularly on complex or high-impact stories
• Oversee production of newscasts
• Make split-second decisions to lead the news team during breaking news and severe weather events
• Work with executive producers to ensure a multi-platform content approach at every stage of the news-gathering process
Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or a related field, and prior newsroom leadership experience
• 5-7 years of content experience, including generation of original content
• Strong journalistic judgment with an emphasis on accurate, fair, and compelling local content, along with community engagement
• Demonstrated experience editing, approving, and coaching scripts and written content
• Excellent people management skills
• Strong communication and conflict management skills
• Strong organizational skills in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
