12News, the NBC affiliate in Phoenix, Arizona, is looking for a smart, aggressive digital-first reporter to own our education solutions beat. This is a 2-year grant-funded, full-time position that will focus on the best practices for education in the state.
Arizona is a place of collisions – between old and new, rural and urban, establishment and anti-establishment. Nowhere are those collisions more apparent than in education. The good thing about collisions, though, is they create energy. And that energy creates solutions. This position will travel the state focusing on new and proven practices for educating the state’s youth. Maybe it’s an innovative vocational program that prepares rural students for healthcare positions. Or a program at an elementary school that’s reduced absences by 40 percent. The education solutions reporter’s job is to go out and find what’s working – and what’s not – and write about it.
The reporter will also be in a unique position to pull together education leaders. We expect this position will coordinate and host town halls on education solutions, as well.
The position is digital-first, but some TV experience is beneficial, as we expect many of these stories to go on our broadcast and streaming platforms, as well as our various digital platforms. The story tempo will be high, and you’ll be turning multiple stories a week, most week.
This is not an entry-level position. You should have at least three years of experience writing stories on deadline, as well as a track record of finding enterprise stories. You will be mentored and guided in this job, however you are expected to bring a solid sense of news judgment and the ability to use it independently. TV experience is preferred, but not necessary.
Responsibilities:
— Writing and producing multiple stories per week for digital and broadcast use
— Meeting and interviewing teachers, school administrators and parents for stories
— Coordinating and hosting town halls for streaming
Requirements:
— A minimum of 3 years full-time reporting experience in a broadcast or digital role
— The ability to pass a timed writing test
— A track record of finding enterprise stories and delivering quick-turn daily stories
— Spanish-language abilities are a plus
— Broadcast reporting skills are a plus
