DESCRIPTION

WUSA9 is looking for a Multi-platform assignment editor to work on our discovery desk who can organize, coordinate and help drive the news operations at TEGNA’s flagship local news outlet in Washington, D.C.

The person in this role will be more than a traditional assignment editor. He or she will be expected to be a content creator – either directly (writing for our platforms or producing streaming media) or in a supporting role by helping execute the vision of newsroom producers and editors. The role requires a focus on multi-platform storytelling — broadcast, online and social content.

This person must be able to multi-task, skillfully using proprietary databases, government information systems, social media and digital tools to research and discover stories. This role requires exceptional organizing and planning skills.

In this role, you will:

  • Aggressively confirm information about breaking news and dispatch crews with urgency
  • Publish content to website and social media accounts.
  • Enterprise news stories on a daily basis
  • Assemble daily news plans, including reporter/photographer assignments using our Editorial Tracker tool in editorial meetings
  • Work closely with newsroom leadership to plan appropriate staffing for daily and future news gathering
  • Proactively vet incoming news tips and coordinate story gathering
  • Coordinate with producers and station engineers on live shots, including executing Facebook Live, YouTube livestream and website livestreams.
  • Develop and maintain lists of contacts at public agencies, major businesses, nonprofit organizations and other influential entities and individuals.
  • Monitor law enforcement and emergency responder scanner traffic to alert newsroom to breaking news.
  • Monitor digital chatter and real-time tools to alert newsroom to content opportunities.
  • Monitor important news stories for developments in a beat system style
  • Represent WUSA9 in conversations with other media organizations about pool coverage and access issues.
  • Coordinate sharing of resources with other stations in the TEGNA group
  • Be curious about new technologies and tools that could improve the assignment process.
  • Coordinate and dispatch the WUSA9 shared news helicopter
