DESCRIPTION

WBIR, the number one rated television station in Knoxville, TN is looking for a Visual Story Teller/Assignment Editor who can lead our team to create engaging content. This position is responsible for selecting, developing and planning daily reporting assignments to be covered by our team of journalists. The job involves fielding calls from the public, staying connected with local news in our communities through emails and news releases and responding to breaking news. The job also entails shooting stories and editing show content on an as needed basis. This position is based in Knoxville, TN. This is a non-exempt, full-time position.

Responsibilities:

  • Exercise strong news judgment that represents the WBIR “Straight From the Heart” brand and TEGNA principles
  • Build relationships with news sources and community stakeholders
  • Provide broadcast and digital content creators with timely and actionable information
  • React quickly to breaking news and move crews effectively
  • Clearly communicate needs and logistics to the news team
  • Maintain knowledge on specific political, community, business leaders and of local politics and governmental operations
  • Occasionally write stories for our digital and broadcast platforms
  • Use the latest editing and photography tools to tell great stories
  • Produce original content on air and on all digital platforms that evoke emotion and tell compelling stories
  • Use creative production techniques such as graphics and other forms of media (viewer pictures, webcam interviews, etc.) to enhance stories
  • Cover breaking, general, sports, weather stories and features, either individually or in partnership with our anchors or multiskilled journalists
  • Attend editorial meetings, participate in discussions, and suggest story ideas.
  • Assist Assignment Manager with long range planning
  • Assist MSJs and Visual Story Tellers with setting up interviews
  • Conduct virtual interviews via Zoom, Teams, Facetime or other platforms and write stories utilizing those interviews
  • Operate live units, TVU and Dejero backpacks
  • Monitor a wide variety of public safety radio systems and social media platforms for breaking news.
  • Use multiple social media platforms to identify stories that will trend well with audiences
  • Search and locate criminal and civil document systems to be distributed to news and digital producers
  • Collaborate with other TEGNA stations, NBC and FOX affiliates and other news partners to facilitate sharing of video elements and information

JOB EXPERIENCE


REQUIREMENTS

Requirements:

  • BA/BS in journalism, communications or related field
  • 2 years of professional experience preferred
  • Possesses knowledge and experience in journalism and storytelling. Demonstrates creativity and innovation ideally in both Digital and Broadcast mediums.
  • Displays in-depth knowledge and understanding of traditional and social media platforms, their respective participants (web, app, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, etc.) and how each platform can be deployed in different scenarios.
  • Passion and vision for emerging media
  • Knowledge of ENPS, Edius and Axis graphics a plus
  • Organizational skills and the ability to work under constant time pressure deadlines
  • Ability to calmly handle live, breaking news situations and changing events
  • Effective written and verbal communications, conflict resolution and interpersonal skills
  • Experience in photojournalism, editing, and content management systems
  • Proven ability to generate creative, engaging, content-driven live shots
  • SNG/ENG experience, a plus
  • Must be flexible with schedule, reliable and dependable
  • Understanding of the tenets of professional journalism
  • Ability to calmly handle live, breaking news situations and changing events
