PURPOSE:   The Sports Director leads and manages in house sports programming and scheduling of professional sports on all company stations. This position trains and oversees the sports staff. The Sports Director reports to Program Director and works in cooperation with station leadership and staff to support the station mission.


The SD has responsibility and understanding of sports planning, reporting, play-by-play, editing and production. Additionally, SD will work with PD/OM in planning and scheduling for professional sports. The SD helps define and maintain ethical, editorial, artistic and technical standards for broadcast sports programs. The SD, as the station’s top sports authority, is responsible for the journalistic integrity of all sports activities.


  • Direct the activities of the sports staff to develop story ideas, track issues and events, select staff for coverage, schedule stories for publication, and schedule time for interviewing, writing and editing.
  • Serve as a primary editor to insure sports reports are produced in an effective, timely and responsible manner. In addition, SD will coordinate with Owner/Managing Partner to produce a broadcast schedule– selecting teams/schools that provide listeners the most valuable local games, and sponsor -able games for clients within the listening area.
  • Acts as a proactive liaison to management and part-time staff to advance the station’s programming. These may include the station programming and operations and development staffs, i.e. training and scheduling of board operators and videographers. These may also include communicating with other appropriate organizations such as the Cardinals, the Blues, Chiefs, and Nascar, etc.
  • The SD adheres to deadlines and makes timely and effective decisions in situations requiring prompt attention. The SD will coordinate a schedule for his/her back up during vacation, time off, etc. In addition to, updating information and/or coordinate a backup to update that information whether on air or online.
  • Produce audio imaging for broadcasts.
  • Create season game schedule.

Administration of Technology:

  • The SD helps maintain equipment and information systems vital to sports planning, sports presentation, and sports broadcasting.  This includes all in house sports, and scheduling professional games in Wireready on-air computers for broadcast, and weekly updating “game decks” for professional sports.
  • Act as an administrator on social media accounts, proficiently and accurately adding company happenings, specifically pertinent to sports, this includes, but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, LINKEDIN, and Instagram.
  • Website Administration: Post and update sports information in a timely and efficient manner to sports web page, specific sports pages (STL Cards, Blues, KC Chiefs, etc), and any additional info needed to convey scheduling and broadcast information, both during seasons and in the off seasons.
  • Responsible for graphics for pages using company software.
