KSDK 5 On Your Side, TEGNA’s NBC affiliate in St. Louis, is seeking a Planning Editor who will lead the day-to-day newsgathering and planning including management of story ideas, content, and resources. This is the one dedicated person in the newsroom looking at tomorrow, next week and beyond.

The ideal candidate is super-organized and makes sure information is shared quickly and freely from the field to the newsroom and the audience. This person is a leader with a strong voice in the editorial meetings and in the newsroom championing audience experience on all platforms.

As Planning Editor, you will make assignments and manage a multiplatform breaking news workflow. You will work with One Content Team leadership, broadcast producers, multi-skilled journalists, photographers and anchors to create multiple platform storytelling experiences. This position reports to the Managing Editor and works closely with the Director of Digital Content and the Digital Content Manager.


  • Overall responsible for news planning so that we offer all stories with context
  • Support newsroom in efforts to land exclusive interviews and engaging profiles
  • Works closely with reporters, broadcast and digital producers to help execute stories, finding a variety of diverse perspectives and voices to make our coverage stronger and more relevant to the St. Louis region
  • Works with news and marketing leadership to implement and streamline newsroom processes
  • Leads and plans editorial meetings as needed
  • Manages communication between station and crews, other news outlets and public officials
  • Assists with training for news operation, research, and communication
  • Manages live shot tracking and use of video ingestion systems
  • Leads spot news execution and scanner monitoring best practices
  • Writes and publishes website content and sends push alerts and breaking news emails
  • Collaborates with other TEGNA stations, NBC affiliates and other partners
  • Guides team members on where and how to find story ideas and information, including how to use metrics and social listening to be audience focused
  • Other duties as assigned




  • At least two years of experience working in a newsroom
  • Skilled writer and copy editor
  • Knowledge of ENPS preferred
  • Experienced team player with excellent communication skills
  • Working knowledge of Content Management Systems
  • Knowledge of best practices across social platforms
  • Willingness to work non-traditional hours as needed for news coverage, including nights and weekends
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or similar field
  • Travel: Rarely: less than 10%
