KAEF/KBVU in Eureka, California has an excellent opportunity for an up-and-coming News Manager. This is the perfect position for a person who wants to run their own news operation as a News Director one day.  We are looking for a person who understands we need to be distinctive, disrupting, impactful and innovative with our content across all platforms.  We want someone with an investigative mind who finds original, impactful stories that hold the powers accountable, ask tough questions, question the answers, follow how tax dollars are being spent and keep an eye on Government to make sure it is doing its job.  We need someone with the discipline to make this happen on all screens every day.  We want someone who can persuade the team to follow their lead.  The person selected for this position will oversee news gathering and production at KAEF/KBVU in Eureka.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Supervise MMJs 
  • Develop and evaluate story ideas, with an emphasis on enterprise journalism and strong storytelling 
  • Oversee local digital operations, including creating and posting content to digital and social platforms
  • Oversee execution of digital strategy by MMJs, Photographer and Producers
  • Approve scripts, assist with re-writes and provide production ideas 
  • Collaborate with news producers on placement of stories 
  • Develop community contacts for story ideas 
  • Provide regular performance reviews to MMJs and producers through coaching and critiquing 
  • Recruit, hire and train new Producers and MMJs
  • Ensure daily newsroom staffing needs are being met
  • Plan for and help lead coverage of major news events and coordinate daily coverage in the Eureka market
  • Responsible for using data to help make decision to grow ratings, page views, video views and post engagement
  • Work with News Director, Assistant News Director, Sales Managers and other Department heads in Chico-Redding to ensure policies and procedures are followed 

Requirements: 

  • Excellent news judgment 
  • Emphasis on original, impactful reporting
  • Interpersonal skills 
  • Writing and editing ability 
  • Imagination and strong management skills 
  • Must be able to work closely with reporters and producers to improve story conception, execution and story-telling skills 

Experience: 

  • At least three (3) years of television news experience as a Producer, MMJ/Anchor, Executive Producer, Managing Editor, or News Director 
  • Experience in supervising news personnel

The base salary compensation range for this role is $64,480 to $68,500. Final compensation for this role will be determined by various factors such as a candidates’ relevant work experience, skills, certifications, and geographic location. Full time positions are eligible for benefits that include participation in a retirement plan, life and disability insurance, health, dental and vision plans, flexible spending accounts, sick leave, vacation time, personal time, parental leave and employee stock purchase plan.
