News19 WLTX-TV in Columbia, SC is looking for an Content Coordinator to plan our day-to-day coverage, crews assignments and community response.

We are looking to elevate our planning for everything from community events to large-scale interviews, court cases to county council meetings, coverage of press conferences to coordination of enterprise story shoots. And when breaking news happens, this person is the type to jump into action, reach out to community contacts for confirmation, pivots crews and directs them to the scene with urgency that meets the level of the event taking place.

The person in this role will be more than a traditional assignment editor. They'll be expected to be a content creator for WLTX broadcast and social/digital platforms– working closely with our digital director to ensure that our newsroom vision is carried out across our various platforms.


JOB EXPERIENCE


REQUIREMENTS

The ideal candidate for this position is a journalist with at least 5 years of experience, has solid news judgment/knowledge of the basic tenets of journalism.

Strong analytical and critical thinking skills are a must.

This person must be able to multi-task, skillfully using proprietary databases, government information systems, social media and digital tools to research and discover stories. This role requires exceptional organizing and planning skills.  The candidate must also possess a BA/BS in journalism, communications, related field or comparable area of expertise.

• Aggressively confirm information about breaking news and dispatch crews with urgency

• Enterprise news stories on a daily basis

• Work with digital team to assemble daily news plans, and guide our editorial meetings

• Ability to make a decision and follow-through to fruition

• Publish content to website and social media accounts.

• Assign stories to our reporters/photographers

• Work closely with newsroom leadership to plan appropriate staffing for daily and future news gathering

• Proactively vet incoming news tips and coordinate story gathering

• Coordinate with producers and station engineers on live shots, including executing Facebook Live, YouTube livestream and website livestreams.

• Develop and maintain lists of contacts at public agencies, major businesses, nonprofit organizations and other influential entities and individuals.

• Monitor law enforcement and emergency responders on social/digital platforms so that we are aware of breaking news events and content opportunities

• Monitor important news stories for developments

• Represent WLTX in conversations with other media organizations about pool coverage and access issues.

• Coordinate sharing of resources with other stations in the TEGNA group

• Be curious about new technologies and tools that could improve the assignment process.

• Perform other tasks as required by News Director

• 5-7 years of experience required

• Experience in a newsroom

• Sense of urgency with breaking news

• Understanding of the tenets of professional journalism

• Ability to calmly handle live, breaking news situations and changing events

• Strong social media and digital writing skills

• Strong news judgement skills

• Strong organizational skills

• Knowledge of digital breaking news tools a plus

• Knowledge of ENPS, Edius and Axis graphics a plus

• Ability to calmly handle live, breaking news situations and changing events

• Comfortable meeting multiple deadlines per day

• Flexible with shift assignments

• Great interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively and timely
