DESCRIPTION

Due to a recent promotion, WHNT/WHDF, the CBS And CW affiliates and News Leaders in Huntsville, AL have a rare opening for our next Chief Engineer. The Chief Engineer is considered part of the leadership team of the station (s) and is someone who thrives on finding ways to make ideas reality.

 

The Chief Engineer of WHNT/WHDF oversees the day-to-day operations of the Engineering Department and is responsible for the maintenance of all broadcast technology and equipment at the station (s).

 

This position is responsible for the current and future technical operation of the station (s) and the overall facilities. They are responsible for the daily management of broadcast and IT Engineers. They ensure that the WHNT/WHDF technical facilities operate at the highest quality within the required guidelines and the established budget. They evaluate and recommend new technology to support WHNT/WHDF operating goals and objectives and in times of technical and/or operational crisis, manage and guide other station employees to a successful outcome while protecting personnel and hardware. This is a full-time, exempt position.

  • Manages all aspects of the Engineering Department

  • Maintains all broadcast technology and equipment for the station (s) including proper maintenance and repair of all technical equipment in studio and transmitter facilities, towers, satellite, and microwave systems.

  • Ensures station compliance with FCC rules and regulations, as well as all local, state, and federal regulations applicable to the station (s), including applicable electrical, mechanical, and structural rules and regulations.

  • Manages approved capital projects from concept to completion including soliciting bids, documentation, and management of the project to ensure completion on time and within budget.

  • Works in conjunction with Nexstar corporate leadership to develop and implement new technologies and technical infrastructure for the station (s).

  • Plans and manages engineering staffing, training, and performance evaluations for the Engineering Department, including hiring, evaluation, promotion, and termination of employees.

  • Assigns projects to staff and verifies that deadlines are being met.


JOB EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor or Associate’s degree preferred in Engineering, IT, Digital Electronics, Broadcasting, or a related field or equivalent combination of education and work-related experience.

  • Minimum five years’ experience with digital electronic systems in a television broadcasting environment, with at least three years’ experience in a leadership role.

  • Experience with servicing and maintaining digital transmitters, microwave equipment, and other broadcast and IT-related equipment.
  • Experience withs fiber connectivity, bonded cellular systems, master and production control, AV routing and patching, audio equipment, graphics systems and editing systems
  • Experience establishing long-range objectives and specifying the strategies and actions to achieve them.

  • Experience guiding, directing, and motivating subordinates, including setting performance goals, monitoring performance as well as coaching and mentoring to help others be successful.


REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be highly proficient with PC and Apple computers, MS Windows and related software, firewalls, and newsroom specific software, telephones, copiers, scanners, and other office equipment.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments, and handle multiple tasks simultaneously. Ability to work flexible hours and be on call as needed for operations. Works closely with General Manager and department managers to ensure station objectives are met. 
  • Fluency in English.
  • Valid Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record.

  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.

    Physical Demands & Work Environment: The Chief Engineer for WHNT/WHDF must be able to stand, sit, reach, climb, conduct telephone conversations, use electronic mail, write letters and memos, conduct face-to-face discussions with individuals or groups, make decisions without supervision, make decisions that impact the results of co-workers, work in close proximity to others, work outdoors in all weather conditions, and work indoors in environmentally controlled conditions.

    In addition, the Chief Engineer must be able to lift, set up and operate equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, and be able to handle, control or feel objects, tools, or controls. Repetitive movements are required. Work may be conducted in extremely bright or inadequate lighting conditions.
