WZZM 13 ON YOUR SIDE is actively searching for an Assignments Editor to help lead our station in content gathering for all platforms within the newsroom. This person is a creative problem-solver, has strong journalistic judgment, and is detail-oriented with an ability to think creatively. As an Assignment Editor, this person must maintain composure and know what steps to take as news is developing.


  • Lead the newsroom to help identify and create unique content that evokes emotion.
  • Assist in developing and assigning news stories of the day and future events as well.
  • Develop and research content through social listening and independent sources.
  • Research for facts and credibility.
  • Skillfully use social media and digital tools to research, discover and distribute content.
  • Enterprise news stories.
  • Drive breaking news coverage through gathering information and handling crew logistics
  • Review news releases, monitor police and fire scanners, and check social media and other local news sources for story ideas
  • Make beat calls to maintain relationships with local agencies like police departments, courts, etc.
  • Look for new and innovate ways to deliver information relevant to our customers wherever they are (e.g. television, website, app, social media)
  • Represent WZZM 13 ON YOUR SIDE in conversations with other media organizations about pool coverage and access issues.
  • A candidate with previous West Michigan news coverage experience is preferred




  • BA/BS in journalism, communications or related field preferred
  • 3+ years of experience preferred
  • Strong communication, conflict management, and customer service skills
  • Skills in identifying engaging, creative and unique content for all platforms
  • Organizational skills in a fast-paced and deadline driven environment
  • Strong social media skills, including an active news hound presence on Twitter and Facebook
  • Knowledge of ENPS, BitCentral, Edius is a plus
  • Ability to work under constant time-constrained deadlines
  • Experience cultivating and developing working relationships with local newsmakers and their staff.
  • Travel: Rarely: less than 10%
  • Work Environment Set: Office: normally performed in a typical interior/office environment
  • Physical Demands Set: Light work: Involves sitting most of the time, walking, lifting, bending, standing, etc.
